September Upcoming Events and Info

September is Healthy Aging Month! Doctors suggest that optimism may indeed be the best medicine. Thinking positively helps reduce stress, avoid illness, and recover more quickly when you are sick or injured. September 13 may be Positive Thinking Day, but you can follow these tips to keep your glass half full rather than half empty all year round:

1.         Use Affirmations – positive self-talk is the first step in thinking positively.

2.         Gratitude – recognize that there is always something to be grateful for.

3.         Kindness – before you receive happiness, you have to give happiness; give aid to others and bring joy to their lives.

4.         Persistence – keep at your goals and do not give up.

5.         Challenge – do not be afraid to try new things, and accept that you might have to change in order to overcome new challenges.

Apple Appreciation Days begin in September. Remember the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” well that still holds true. Apples are packed with fiber and antioxidants, and some research suggests that apples can increase bone density, reduce symptoms of asthma, ward off Alzheimer’s, lower cholesterol, aid in the management of diabetes, and help prevent lung, liver, breast, and colon cancer. How’s that for health benefits? There are over 7,000 different varieties of apples. Perhaps the best day to try a new variety is on September 15th, “International Eat an Apple Day”.

The Family Council of Grace Cypress will meet Saturday, September 8th, in the Activity Room at 10:00 am. Monday, September 17th at 2:30 we will celebrate all the September birthdays with entertainer, Karen Pfeiffer. Everyone is invited.

The residents requested a visit to The National Museum of Funeral History for their County Bus Trip in September. One of the residents had previously visited the museum and gave it an outstanding review. The trip will be on Tuesday, September 18th.  We will load the County Bus at 9:30 and leave Grace at 10:00. Please contact our Therapeutic Recreation Director, Carolyn Kregel or our Activity Assistant Ann Marie Ryan, if you would like to join us on this trip.

The Northwest Houston “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” is Saturday, September 22nd at Vintage Park,110 Vintage Park Blvd., on Louetta Rd near Hwy 249. You can join our team, the Grace Care Center of Cypress team, online or on the day of the event. Registration on the day of the event is at 7:30 am. The 5K walk begins at 8:30.
